Our Learning Environments

  • Our Class Rooms

Cherry Blossom has four learning environments and two playgrounds. There are separate rooms catering for 0-2 years Bilby’s, 2-3 years Joeys, 3-4 years Wallabies and 4-5 years Kangaroos. Each room provides an intimate space for children to work individually, together with peers and Educators on their interests and ideas.

Cherry Blossom aims to provide a home-like environment for all our children. Educators work closely with families to build strong secure attachments to our children. Our Nursery provides an environment which is nurturing, supporting and safe. Educators endeavour to meet the individual needs of all our infants. We aim to provide an environment which stimulates all areas of development at an age appropriate level.

Infants aged 0-2 years are developing quickly and at Cherry Blossom we acknowledge that each individual infant has a different routine.Routine is essential for this age group and we endeavour to follow yours as closely as possible within our environment.

We acknowledge, this may be the first time you are encountering care outside the home for your child and or children. We at Cherry Blossom strongly recommend spending sometime at the centre before you start your child, so we can get to know them and you.

    Joey’s

At Cherry Blossom, we believe that children are capable leaners who come to the service with their own knowledge and ideas to share with our Centre community. As Educators we value this knowledge and endeavour to extend on it at every opportunity during the day. We also celebrate that every child is on his or her own journey and it is through partnerships with families and children that we can make this a successful, fun and positive journey.

Between the ages of 2 and 3 years we see significant development around language, social, cognitive, self-help and gross motor skills. The focus of the Joeys room is to develop our precious babies into toddlers. The Joeys room focuses on modelling and forming friendships with positive social interaction and sharing, toilet training and independent feeding and drinking, language development and conversation. Educators do this through the rooms program, monthly observations on individual and groups of children, project work and the most important part communication and goals from parents.

    Wallabies

At Cherry Blossom, we believe that children are capable leaners who come to the service with their own knowledge and ideas to share with our Centre community. As Educators we value this knowledge and endeavour to extend on it at every opportunity during the day. We also celebrate that every child is on his or her own journey and it is through partnerships with families and children that we can make this a successful, fun and positive journey.

Children aged 3-4 years need to be challenged and offered a range of activities that extend on and develop their knowledge and skills. Socially children aged 3-4 years are beginning to make stable peer relationships and are moving from parallel play (playing beside their peers) to co-operative play (where they engage in role play and interact with peers in play). Their language has developed in that they can communicate in sentences and begin to express how they are feeling in more complex ways. They are more independent and curious about the world around them.

To support this development the Wallabies room works from a program that is interest based. This means that Educators listen to children’s voices, gather their ideas and then base projects and investigations around their interest topic. It is through these topics we introduce literacy, numeracy.

The Wallabies Room also has a School Preparation program which assists the children in building the fundamental skills they need for school, which is age appropriate. Some of these activities include recognising their name, counting, taking turns, comprehension and conversation. This program runs over two years, with the second year being in the Kangaroos Room.

    Kangaroos

Our Kangaroos room aims to provide a balance between a structured program to get children ready for school and play based curriculum which research recommends. Daily activities are focused on providing the children with a diverse range of experiences which are relevant to their lives in the Blue Mountains community and the wider world. Our program encourages each child to extend their interest and abilities through activity, imagination and curiosity. We believe our program prepares the children for an easy and happy transition to school.

The Kangaroos Room extends on the School Preparation Program in its second year. Educators know that a lot of skills the children will need for school can be learned and practiced during free play by providing stimulating activities. However there is also a need for more formal play and activities or intentional teaching. In these sessions we will undertake such activities, games and discussions that will help the children to become familiar with the skills they need for school. These lessons will be planned intentional teaching sessions in either large group or small group form to encourage social skills as well as learning. By having group activities the children are able to learn from their peers as well as have one on one interaction with the teacher, as is the process at Primary School.

Let us help you in giving your child the best start to school.
